Since opening its Saskatoon and La Ronge storefronts in 2022 and adding Humboldt in 2023, 5Buds Cannabis has continued to grow into one of Saskatchewan’s most recognized cannabis retailers. The retailer has now expanded into a network that spans the province — making 5Buds the largest independent cannabis retailer in Saskatchewan.

Over the past year, the company has celebrated four new store openings:

  • Meadow Lake – opened April 2024
  • Nipawin – acquired and opened February 2025
  • Weyburn – acquired and opened April 2025
  • Regina – opened August 2025, marking the most recent addition

While 5Buds has long been a strong presence in northern Saskatchewan, these new locations represent a deliberate push southward. “Up until this year, our stores were very heavily situated in the north,” says Calvin Isackson, Managing Director of 5Buds since 2020. “Now we’re expanding into central and southern communities where there’s real opportunity to grow our brand.”

This strategy has paid off. In 2025 alone, 5Buds has seen a 38% increase in store count. With 11 locations now open across the province, 5Buds is only a few stores behind some of Canada’s national cannabis chains.

Growth hasn’t come without tough decisions. The Saskatoon storefront, which was highlighted in the last newsletter, has since closed after careful assessment. Still, the expansion into new markets like Regina and Weyburn has allowed the company to reach more customers than ever before.

“Every time we enter a new community, we’re not only growing our footprint — we’re creating opportunities,” Calvin explains. “We typically track between 14 and 42% Indigenous employment across our stores, and people really resonate with what 5Buds offers: product selection, pricing, and customer service.”

As 5Buds looks ahead, the vision is clear: keep building more stores in Saskatchewan, while exploring new opportunities both inside and outside the province.

“In this industry, many competitors are scaling back or closing locations,” Calvin says. “But we’ve found our place in the marketplace, and our communities continue to support us. That’s what makes this growth so exciting.”
