The goal of our summer student/mentorship program is to help develop tomorrow’s leaders by providing a meaningful work experience for students from the Athabasca Basin region.

Students will be matched as best as possible to opportunities based on the needs of the organization and the student’s past experience, area of interest and level of study.

Marketing
Athabasca Basin Development

Job Description

  • 1 position available 
  • 16-week term starting May 5, 2025 (depending on school schedule) 
  • Must be enrolled in university or business certificate program. 
  • Must have excellent communication skills. 
  • Experience using MS Office (word, excel, outlook) or similar program. 
  • Must have driver’s licence. Some travel may be required. 

Reporting to the Director of Marketing & Communications with Athabasca Basin Development, the Summer Student will assist with the following: 

  • Will assist other departments with special projects as assigned.Qualifications
  • Attend events and/or site visits to take photos and videos for social media and other promotional materials. 
  • Assist with developing a corporate videos and social media content. 
  • Prepare, write, and disseminate a company newsletter. 
  • Enter archived newsletter stories into new website. 
  • Review requests for sponsorship and provide feedback. 
  • Attend AEEDC (Athabasca Education and Economic Development Committee) meetings and provide feedback from the youth/student perspective. Take minutes where required. 
  • Review the company’s annual marketing/communications plan and provide feedback. 
  • Review content of websites and update as needed. 
  • Help develop and organize events, such as an annual golf tournament
  • Organize a summer student gathering. 
  • Work with PAGC and summer students to complete required paperwork. 
  • Assist with new website projects.

Administrative
Yá thi Néné Lands and Resources Office

Job Description

The Ya’thi Néné Land and Resource Office works to promote and enhance the environmental, social, cultural and economic health and well-being of the Athabasca residents including Black Lake, Fond du Lac and Hatchet Lake Denesuline First Nations, Stony Rapids, Wollaston Lake, Camsell Portage and Uranium City. 

Position

Under the direction of the Ya’thi Néné Land and Resource Office Corporate Affairs Manager the Administrative Summer Student will be focused on a variety of administrative and communication tasks that support the office and its staff. This includes assistance with general administration, booking travel, expense reimbursement, filing, drafting correspondences & reports, maintaining social media and the website, taking minutes at meetings and assistance on other matters as directed. 

Responsibilities

  • Assist with answering incoming calls, dealing with inquires, re-directing calls appropriately, and initiating outgoing calls as required; 
  • Collect and distribute incoming and outgoing mail and faxes; 
  • Assist with the maintenance of the Ya’thi Néné website and Facebook page; 
  • Format information for internal and external communication including memos, emails, presentations and reports; 
  • Book travel, including hotels and airfares as directed; 
  • Develop requisitions and expense reports; 
  • Record minutes of meetings and distribute as directed; 
  • Maintain binders of current administrative procedures and meeting minutes; 
  • Perform photocopying, scanning, faxing and database entry; 
  • Maintain the office filing system as well as online filing system; 
  • Maintain a clean office environment and order office supplies as needed; 
  • Engage in other tasks and assignments as directed by the Corporate Affairs Manager. 

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a post-secondary institution and returning to studies in the Fall of 2025; 
  • Preference will be given to those enrolled in Administration, Business Administration, Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Education, Indigenous Studies, Economics, Law, Environmental Science; 
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment; 
  • Excellent oral and written communication, minute taking and presentation skills; 
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite, social media, and data entry; 
  • Requires personal vehicle and valid driver’s license; 
  • Experience working with First Nations or other Indigenous Communities is considered an asset; 
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with leaders, industry and other stakeholders; 
  • Strong interest in working with the Athabasca Basin Communities in their traditional territory to advance and protect their Aboriginal and Treaty Rights; 
  • Experience with bookkeeping considered an asset; 
  • Experience with translation (Dene to English and vice versa) considered an asset. 

Compensation and Benefits: 

  • Salary will be $20/hr.

Yard
Points North (Points North)

Job Description

  • 2 positions available 
  • Must be enrolled in a post-secondary program and returning in fall 
  • 11-week term starting June 16, 20245
  • 2 weeks in, 2 weeks out rotation 

 Reporting to the Yard Supervisor, the Yard Summer Student will: 

  • Handle freight in safe timely manner 
  • Maintain yard, ramp and warehouse 
  • Safely operate equipment on and off-site 
  • Assist with aircraft in the yard and at the dock 
  • Relate to the public and co-workers in a positive, friendly and professional manner 
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned

Who Can Apply?

These positions are designated for residents of Athabasca Basin in Saskatchewan’s north.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Able and willing to travel
  • Available to work from May 2025 to the end of August 2025

  • Students who are reliable and show up on time
  • Students who have time management and communication skills, based on school presentations, extracurricular activities, and/or work experience.

Working Conditions

  • Work locations will be in Saskatoon or Prince Albert (M-F office hours)
  • Working conditions will vary depending on the position. Environment can include office environments, warehouse, construction sites, shops, yards, outdoors.
  • Some positions require ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Students will be required to sign confidentiality agreements as needed.
  • Some travel may be required, depending on the position.

Term

  • These are temporary, full time positions that will be up to a 4-month term starting in May 2025.
